Why REST?
Today, almost all modern software development is built around REST APIs, JSON, and event-driven architectures. In comparison, the current EMIF/SOAP interfaces are unnecessarily complex, heavy, and costly to implement and maintain.
A modern REST API lowers barriers to innovation and makes it significantly easier to:
develop and maintain services
integrate third-party systems
automate processes
build self-service solutions
create analytics and insight tools
In practice, this means lower development costs and faster innovation across the entire power market.
For Elhub, replacing Elhub's core services with REST represents a big shift towards a more lightweight architecture that will be much easier to maintain and expand upon.
Also, the developer experience will be much improved for anyone working with Elhub interfaces.
Elhub Does Not Need a “Big Bang” Migration
This does not necessarily mean shutting down EMIF overnight.
A realistic approach could be:
Introduce REST APIs alongside EMIF
Prioritize new functionality in REST
Provide a modern developer portal and OpenAPI specifications
Gradually phase out SOAP
This is how many other industries have modernized their integration platforms.
